When motherhood doesn’t feel “enough”

Do you ever wake up in the morning feeling purposeless?

Me too…especially when the week has been tough and life feels mundane.

Recently, I’ve been really praying to the Lord about wanting to feel excited again when I wake up and look at motherhood with satisfaction and contentment.  I think when we are young, we automatically dream big with great expectancy and then we get older and our vision seems to slowly narrow.  As women, we often have big dreams for either careers or getting married and having kids or for many of us, it’s both.  Then not long after we get married and have kids or get the career, it seems we hit the “peak” of our lives. And once the honeymoon phase is over (not just with our husbands but the whole daydream we grew up with), we find ourselves saying “now what?”

Right now for me it’s wake up, dishes, feed kids, homeschool, pick up toys, make lunch, nap time, pick up toys, make dinner, clean up dinner, baths, pick up toys, bed. Of course there are exciting things that we do every now and then, like date nights and special events. And we hope and dream about things still, like going on vacation and maybe having a beach house of our own or a new business venture one day. But that’s not the dream or vision we’ve waited for our whole lives, ya know? And we can feel, kind of, well…stuck.

So how do we feel excited again? That’s what I had been asking the Lord.

Through Scripture, devotions, and other sources, the word “worship” kept coming up. Consistently, I was being reminded that my purpose was to worship and glorify Him.

Psalm 148:3-5 says: “Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created.”

To praise Him is to worship Him. And when you think about the purpose of the sun, moon and stars, it’s for people to see them and see God and His goodness. So if that’s what His creation is for, than isn’t it ours too? And how do we do that in the mundane?

When I really began to meditate on that, things started to change. Specifically my perspective. I realized that when I feed my children, I show them the character of God that is a provider. When I hug them, I glorify God as a comforter. When I listen to them speak, I show them God hears us. When I clean and organize my home, I show them the character of God that brings order to things. When I discipline them lovingly, I show them God does the same. Every single moment of each day is my opportunity to show my children who God is. Every task that is set before me, is my chance to glorify God and how amazing He is. How beautiful the role of a wife, a mom and a woman! How can I not be excited when I look at it this way? My purpose becomes clear and my tasks no longer seem mundane but extremely worthy and important.

Lord, whenever my mind starts to believe that my tasks are mundane and unimportant, remind me what a privilege it is to show others who you are. The journey of my life is not a goal to be reached or a success to achieve but simply to glorify and worship the goodness that is YOU. Let all lies from the enemy be far from me and let me live by this truth, that if the stars were made to worship, so am I. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
